The largest living primate is the gorilla, with such power that it is evident even when it appears to be still.
The dominant leader of a gorilla pack is called the Silverback, named for its silvery, gray back hair that grows when the animal is mature. As the protector and leader of the group, it is to the Silverback that the other gorillas defer.
When D. Chavo entered the music game, he knew that he wanted to name his record business after an animal that was powerful and capable of developing swiftly, just as his business in music has done.
“I wanted to have a company that was aggressive in the music business. I wanted it to be about the hustle, but fearless. When you say ‘Silverback,’ you’ll think of something strong that won’t bow down.”
Silverback Records manifests all of that as a powerful Indie label in an age of music industry turmoil and uncertainty that has broken many artists and many would-be Indie record companies.
Silverback has made a powerful impression in Texas and is poised to develop swiftly across the nation, with a simple plan of strategic hard work.
D. Chavo explains that the company’s mission “is to keep it simple, become successful and work hard.”
D. added that Silverback Records focuses on developing the artists so that they can expand to more than just their home market.
“Our goal is to be a fully functional record label, which means that we may expand to include a Justin Beiber or a Brittany Spears, or even a Lady Gaga, but Rap and R&B is our core and we will keep doing that well. “
And Silverback has done well in establishing a roster of artists that represent Rap and R&B Music based on what will have a broad appeal and a long lasting impression in the music industry.
Their premiere artist, Young Byrd, is a Dallas, Texas-based rap artist, establishing a musical footprint with his debut single, “How Ya Do Dat?” a track with universal appeal about the physical ability of the female body when dancing.
Byrd was intentionally and properly groomed by D. to be the premiere artist of the label. The single was heavily promoted in the clubs and on radio and both the single and the label were promoted heavily in the Dallas market.
By the time Byrd’s promotional program had begun to run its course, artists were approaching D. on a regular basis, wanting to be a part of what they saw as a strong music company with a promising future.
“I did the work that I needed to do and it paid off. Now, I’ll just keep that mentality going to keep things growing.”
And Silverback is growing. Fast. The label already has three other artists in development who will be ready to follow up on the success of Young Byrd.
Boss Squad is another Rap act on the label and D. already has them working on television commercials to get them the proper exposure while they are in the studio working on their musical presentation.
Miss Exclusive is an R&B singer who D. describes as “more of a rugged singer with a Mary J. Blige vibe about her. She sings about what’s going on in the streets and will be real about what the situation is. She’s in the studio right now.”
Another Rap act is Willie C, who is featured on the Young Byrd single “When A Nigga Broke.”
“Willie C is very diverse. He has the potential to be internationally successful because he raps, produces and even sings a bit.”
The overall goal for developing the artists is to build up their storage of music, so that once they hit, they will be able to sustain themselves with additional hits.
A major part of inserting Silverback Records into the community was to give back to the community, said Chavo. The music company has launched programs for youth so that change can take place.
“Silverback Records’ mission is to remain influential in the community in terms of teaching kids to become positive role models for other kids, so more of them can do the right thing. We’re very influential in the community for the sake of our children.
The Silverback gorilla inhabits mountains and has thick hair that insulates it from the cold climate of high elevations.
And just like the Silverback gorilla, Silverback Records has a thick skin of armor to insulate its artists from the cold realities of the music industry as the Independent music company climbs to high elevations.
Those high elevations will only be reached with strength, aggressiveness and diversity. D. Chavo is making certain that Silverback Records has all of the above.
